On May 24th, something powerful happened in the world of pickleball. A new energy, a new vibe, and a new community took the court — and it was called The First 24.
Hosted by the Black Culture Pickleball Club (BCPC) and supported by Camda Sports Foundation, this inaugural event was more than just a tournament — it was a cultural celebration that brought people together through movement, music, and shared joy.
From the Moment You Walked In...
The sound of old-school R&B welcomed guests as they stepped onto the courts at Durham Sportsplex. The vibe was undeniable — electric, warm, and alive with culture. The courts weren't just about the game; they became a stage for expression, laughter, and connection.
Over 30 amazing participants showed up to play, learn, and celebrate. For many, it was their first time holding a pickleball paddle — but by the end of the day, it felt like they’d been part of this community for years. Friendly matchups, doubles rotations, and a whole lot of cheering filled every moment.
Food, Family & Fire Energy
Off the court, the celebration continued. Grilled Jerk Chicken sandwiches with flavour, serving up plates stacked with classics. There were snacks, cold drinks, and hangout areas where stories were swapped and new friendships were formed. Dads played with sons, aunties played with nieces — it was a multigenerational vibe that reminded us why events like these matter.
People didn’t just show up to play — they came to belong.
“This is what the sport has been missing.”
That’s what one guest said. And they were right.
The First 24 wasn’t just a game day — it was a statement. It showed the power of culture to bring people to the courts and create a space that feels like home. It broke down barriers. It welcomed first-timers with open arms. And it reminded everyone that fun, fitness, and fellowship can thrive in the same space.
Why We Need More Events Like This
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world — but for many Black and racialized communities, it’s still unfamiliar territory. BCPC is changing that.
By weaving culture into sport, we’re building an inclusive and joyful pathway for people to stay active, socialize, and feel seen. This is just the beginning — and the demand for more events like The First 24 is already loud and clear.
What’s Next?
We’re just getting started. Up next: SALUTE DADS — a Father’s Day Pickleball BBQ experience like no other. Friendly competition, food, family, and vibes for adults 19+. Stay tuned, and make sure you’re on the invite list.
